Does Tooth Extraction Hurt?

No! Our dentist will numb the area so you do not feel pain during your tooth extraction. If you have dental anxiety or simply need an extra measure of comfort care, we offer sedation to help you completely relax during treatment. Our sedation options include:

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is a pill prescribed by your dentist and taken prior to your treatment. You will remain conscious throughout your treatment, but this medication will ease your anxiety and keep you comfortable. You will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is often referred to as laughing gas. During your treatment, you will breathe in the nitrous oxide, which works to keep you relaxed. One benefit of nitrous oxide is that it acts fast and will wear off quickly, allowing you to drive yourself home after treatment

What to Expect During Your Tooth Extraction

Our welcoming and compassionate staff will do everything they can to make you feel comfortable during treatment.

Consultation

During your consultation, your dentist will examine your mouth and determine if any tooth or teeth require extraction.

Anesthesia

Your dentist will numb the area with local anesthesia. Sedation options such as nitrous oxide are available to ensure you are completely comfortable.

Tooth Extraction

Your dentist will carefully loosen the tooth using specialized dental instruments, then gently lift it from the socket.

Stitches

Once the tooth is extracted, your dentist will place gauze over the site to encourage a blood clot to form and help prevent a dry socket.

Post-Op

You will be asked to bite down gently on the gauze. This pressure will help stop bleeding at the extraction site and encourage the blood clot to form. You can remove the gauze once the bleeding has stopped.

Recovery

It is important to follow your dentist's instructions to speed recovery and prevent complications.

Keep Your Mouth Clean

Avoid the extraction site when brushing your teeth. To keep the area clean, you may gently swirl mouth wash or salt water.

Eat Soft Foods

Eat soft foods for a few days post-extraction, such as yogurt, scrambled eggs, and oatmeal. Avoid crunchy or spicy foods as you heal.

Avoid Straws

Drinking from a straw or making sucking motions can cause a dry socket. This painful condition occurs when the blood clot is prematurely dislodged. Avoid drinking from a straw for at least 48 hours.

Comfort Care

Some swelling and discomfort are typical, and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications and ice. Your dentist may prescribe pain medications or antibiotics. Take them as instructed.

If you experience significant pain, bleeding, or other unusual side effects, call our Dumas, TX, practice immediately.

Don’t I Need an Oral Surgeon for a Tooth Extraction?

No. Our dentists at Bonner Family Dentistry in Dumas, TX, have the skill, experience, and training to handle tooth extractions. An added benefit to visiting our dentistry practice is that we provide a wide range of restorative treatments to replace your tooth after extraction, such as dental bridges and implant-supported crowns. If you require specialized dental work such as a bone graft or complex extraction, your dentist can refer you to one of our trusted oral surgeons in the area.
